Thanks to the magic of time-travel, a fresh twist will be added to the origins of Superman in Krypton. The upcoming Syfy series will be set more than two hundred years before the birth of Kal-El/Superman and follow Kal’s grandfather Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe) as he fights to redeem his family’s honor after the House of El has been ostracized and shamed. Upon receiving a visit from a figure from the future, Seg-El becomes aware of his grandson’s legacy as well as the destruction of Krypton and must struggle with the choice to either save his world or let it happen to ensure his grandson’s destiny.
“You can tell [from that trailer] that time travel is involved, and what that means is history could be changed, and what happens in this show could be very different from the backstory that people know,” said executive producer David S. Goyer at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour. “A lot of people know that Krypton blows up and that’s what caused Superman to come to Earth, but this is really an untold story.” The producers are looking at Krypton as a completely new story rather than a prequel and already have a seven or eight-year plan for the future of the series. As for that figure from the future, that would be Adam Strange (Shaun Sipos), who Geoff Johns refers to as an unlikely hero. “He’s the unlikely choice of shouldering this burden of trying to stop someone from the present trying to prevent this Superman legacy.” Johns said. “Adam Strange is a character that doesn’t really embody what Superman does as far as honor and justice, doesn’t really know right from wrong, but looks up to Superman.“
Krypton will debut on Syfy on March 21, 2018.
