Yesterday, Paramount announced a series of release dates for film projects that will serve to expand their Hasbro Cinematic Universe, including: G.I. JOE, DUNGEONS & DRAGONS, MICRONAUTS, as well as an untitled Hasbro/Paramount cinematic venture. Today, the studio has shared that director Tim Kirkby's ACTION POINT comedy starring JACKASS' Johnny Knoxville has been rescheduled from its March 23rd release to May 11, 2018. As a result of the move, ACTION POINT will square off against New Line/Warner Bros. Melissa McCarthy comedy LIFE OF THE PARTY and Annapurna’s WHERE'D YOU GO BERNADETTE for box office supremacy.
In addition to shuffling around the release date for Kirkby's comedy film, Paramount will also reschedule its return to the ocean depths of Bikini Bottom for the third SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS animated film. Rather than float to the surface in August of 2019, Spongebob and his friends will instead return to theaters on July 31, 2020. Furthermore, Paramount has also set an animated title for May 15, 2020, and has removed a Paramount/Nickelodeon hybrid that was originally scheduled for July 31, 2020.
It strikes me as a bit odd that another Spongebob movie is on the way. Is the wise-cracking, overall-wearing citizen of the sea still cool with the kids? And what about Johnny Knoxville? I haven't head hide nor hair from that dude in what feels like ages. Oh no! Am I finally becoming out of touch with what moviegoers want from their comedies, these days? Have I become the equivalent of Grandpa Simpson yelling at clouds? I think I'll leave you all to digest this information in peace while I go heat up a bowl of my favorite flaxseed-flavored mush. Now get off my lawn.
