Disney has been making a run at live action adaptations of their classic animated fairy tales, but the Rob Marshall musical is going to be something a little different. Taking classic characters like Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood, INTO THE WOODS is a musical from Stephen Sondheim that combines all of those tales into an interconnected experience.

To date we have seen just a sole image of Meryl Streep as a witch but now the studio has revealed several more that showcase actors like Streep, Emily Blunt, James Corden, Johnny Depp, Tracy Ullman, Chris Pine and Anna Kendrick.

“Into the Woods” is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch who has put a curse on them.

The musical also features the talents of several Broadway performers for what should be a rousing theatrical experience. The question is whether this will appease fans of the original stage production and bring in new folks who may not be familiar with the songs. Could this be the next CHICAGO or LES MISERABLES or will INTO THE WOODS be another ROCK OF AGES? We will find out when it hits theaters on December 25th.
