So, this is crazy. As I reported earlier this month, HELLRAISER is finally – after many false starts – getting a film remake from the director of the Sundance darling THE NIGHT HOUSE, David Bruckner. Which could be exciting! However, Deadline is reporting that – alongside the remake – an HBO series is also in the works!
The series pilot (and several subsequent episodes) will be directed by David Gordon Green (HALLOWEEN, HALLOWEEN KILLS), while the episodes will be written by Michael Dougherty (TRICK 'R TREAT, GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS) and TV veteran Mark Verheiden (BATTLESTAR GALACTICA). The HBO series will also apparently have nothing to do with the upcoming remake, and instead will be a continuation of the original continuity (similar to how Gordon Green's HALLOWEEN reboot ignored Rob Zombie's take and was set after John Carpenter's original film).
Here's the official synopsis:
The idea is to create an elevated continuation and expansion of the well-established Hellraiser mythology. It is by no means a remake, but rather assumes the past mythology to be a given. The centerpiece remains Pinhead, the pin cushion-headed merciless leader of the Cenobites, the formerly humans-turned-demons that live in an extra-dimensional realm and are activated through a puzzle box called the Lament Configuration. The Cenobites come from hell to harvest human souls and keep balance between good and evil.
No official release date as of yet, but we'll obviously keep you posted!
So what do you guys think? You excited for the show? Or would you prefer they just stuck to the remake? Or, better yet, should Hollywood just leave well-enough alone? Either way, sound off below!
