Although Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore hasn’t exactly impressed at the box office, the Harry Potter franchise remains an important one for Warner Bros. But it’s possible that the next stage of the franchise might roll out on the small screen. According to The Wall Street Journal, new Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav will soon be meeting with J.K. Rowling to discuss making new Harry Potter-related content for HBO Max.
The WSJ report said, “Mr. Zaslav is looking to make fresh ‘Harry Potter’-related content for HBO Max – Warner Bros. made all the wizarding franchise’s movies – people familiar with his thinking said, and plans to meet with creator J.K. Rowling in the coming weeks to discuss the matter.” This isn’t the first we’ve heard of the Wizarding World heading to the streaming service as it was rumoured last year that a Harry Potter TV series was in development for HBO Max. The potential series was still in the extremely early stages at the time with no writers or talent attached, but HBO Max and Warner Bros. quickly released a statement at the time saying, “There are no Harry Potter series in development at the studio or on the streaming platform.” Former WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar further teased plans to expand the franchise.
There’s this little thing called Harry Potter, which is one of the most beloved franchises. And we’re incredibly thankful to be able to partner with J.K. Rowling and so I would argue there’s a lot of fun and potential there as well.
It was announced early on that the Fantastic Beasts franchise would consist of five movies, but following the poor reception of the Fantastic Beasts franchise, not to mention the controversies involving some of those associated with it, some have wondered if Warner Bros. will just pull the plug. Perhaps HBO Max might be the new home for the next stage of the Harry Potter franchise.
