Based on the Masamune Shirow series of the same name, Rupert Sanders' GHOST IN THE SHELL stars Scarlett Johansson as the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9 which is devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists. Although I'm not quite as familiar with the source material which GHOST IN THE SHELL is based on as others are, I was still surprised at how successful the trailers have been on selling me on the project. Obviously a few pretty visuals and intriguing ideas do not a movie make, but with the debut of GHOST IN THE SHELL just a little over a month away, we won't have long to wait to see how it turns out. Empire has released a new photo from the film which features the Major on a cool futuristic motorcycle. Click to embiggen!
Scarlett Johansson told Empire that the Major is "living a unique experience" in the film and is at something of an "existential crossroads" when we first encounter her.
As somebody who has an idea of who she thinks she was, and then who she is now, and the person that she feels she is, this sort of gnawing feeling she has in her ghost. Being able to play those three sides: the ego, the superego and the id… That was pretty enticing.
Johansson also commented on her flesh-toned silicone camouflage suit which has been featured prominently in much of GHOST IN THE SHELL's marketing, saying that "I don’t wear that too often, thankfully. It’s hot where you don’t want it to be and cold where you don’t want it to be." GHOST IN THE SHELL will hit theaters on March 31, 2017.
