New First They Killed My Father trailer highlights critical praise

Angelina Jolie’s other directorial efforts – IN THE LAND OF BLOOD AND HONEY, UNBROKEN and BY THE SEA – didn’t quite garner the critical praise many were expecting. But with her latest work – FIRST THEY KILLED MY FATHER – she has finally delivered a film that has all the critics buzzing. The movie is currently streaming on Netflix and a new trailer has just been put out to lure in those who have yet to check it out.

Here is a full plot synopsis for the film:

First They Killed My Father is the adaptation of Cambodian author and human rights activist Loung Ung’s gripping memoir of surviving the deadly Khmer Rouge regime from 1975 to 1978. The story is told through her eyes, from the age of five, when the Khmer Rouge came to power, to nine years old. The film depicts the indomitable spirit and devotion of Loung and her family as they struggle to stay together during the Khmer Rouge years.

Standing at an 89% on Rotten Tomatoes the movie is by far Jolie’s best-reviewed directorial work, and we could see the movie have a big presence in the Best Foreign Language Film race at the Oscars, as the movie is Cambodia’s official selection for the year’s race. More than the other movies she’s directed this one is closer to her heart given that she adopted her son, Maddox, from Cambodia (who consulted on the film and is credited as an executive producer).

I have yet to catch the film but will remedy that soon.  The film looks particularly jarring much like the last child soldier drama to hit Netflix – BEASTS OF NO NATION – and that film was one of my favorites of the year. Plus you can’t beat the lack of an admission ticket and the ability to watch the movie in my pajamas.
