Following the release of STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER, the future of the feature-film side of the STAR WARS franchise is largely unknown, but there are plenty of STAR WARS projects being developed for the Disney+ streaming service, and Variety has the scoop on the latest one.
According to the outlet, Disney has tapped Leslye Headland, the co-creator, showrunner, and executive producer of Netflix's Russian Doll series, to develop a new STAR WARS TV series for Disney+. As is customary with all things STAR WARS, details about the new series are being kept under wraps, but Variety has heard that the new series will be female-centric and take place in a different part of the STAR WARS timeline than the other franchise projects. Given that most of the STAR WARS films and TV shows in existence fall somewhere between THE PHANTOM MENACE and THE RISE OF SKYWALKER (encompassing about 70 years), it would be nice to focus on a period of STAR WARS history which we haven't explored much. (Deadline added a few more details, saying that the series will be an action thriller with martial arts elements.) Headland will write the new series as well as serve as showrunner, and the series is currently in the midst of gathering staff. In addition to to her writing and producing duties on Russian Doll, Headland also directed four episdoes of the Netflix series, so it stands to reason that she could helm an episode or two of the new STAR WARS series as well.
Speaking of STAR WARS on the small-screen, it was recently revealed that a third season of The Mandalorian was already underway, and there are several other STAR WARS projects being developed for Disney+, including an Obi-Wan Kenobi series with Ewan McGregor reprising the role as well as a ROGUE ONE prequel series focusing on Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and K-2SO (Alan Tudyk).
