The world of superheroes is full of masks, and HBO's upcoming Watchmen series will examine how we as a society feel about heroes, most notable those who wear masks and fight frime. HBO has released a new featurette which gives us our best look yet at the new series coming from Damon Lindelof next month.
Watchmen features the talents of Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Jean Smart, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Frances Fisher, and many others, but it won't be a straight-up adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' celebrated graphic-novel, instead, Damon Lindelof has said that the new series will treat the original comic as their "old testament," adding that "those issues are sacred ground and will not be retread nor recreated nor reproduced nor rebooted. They will however be remixed. Because the bass lines in those familiar tracks are just too good and we’d be fools not to sample them." With just a little over a month until the series debuts, I'm quite hopeful that Lindelof will be able to pull this off.
The official synopsis for Watchmen:
Set in an alternate history where masked vigilantes are treated as outlaws, WATCHMEN, from executive producer Damon Lindelof (Emmy® winner for “Lost”; HBO’s “The Leftovers”) embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel of the same name, while attempting to break new ground of its own.
Once again, Watchmen will premiere on HBO on October 20, 2019.
