New details on Incredibles 2, Wreck it Ralph 2 & more from D23

Disney's D23 Expo is now underway and all sorts of juicy tidbits from Disney & Pixar's upcoming slate have trickled out. Thanks to John Lasseter, we already know that the upcoming INCREDIBLES 2 will pick up right after the first film left off, with "the Underminer and a big old set piece," but now we have a few more new details about the Brad Bird sequel, including that Elastigirl, and not Mr. Incredible, will be the star of the film.

While Elastigirl (Holly Hunter) will be off adventuring, her husband (Craig T. Nelson) will be at home looking after the baby. The first footage from INCREDIBLES 2 was also screened, showing Jack Jack as he "wanders outdoors after his dad falls asleep. There, he shows off his new new-found superpowers as he gets into a confrontation with a raccoon. His trick? He can multiply." Director Brad Bird said that the sequel is "fundamentally a story about family," adding that the animation will definitely benefit from the latest technology. "The technology has gotten so much better; We can get them close to what we wanted to do in the [original]. It’s like driving a better car." The Incredibles will also get a new house, except this time, it will be a super lair. The only problem is that it's "made up of sharp corners, which is not ideal for a baby." I wouldn't be surprised if Jack Jack won't have a problem with that. INCREDIBLES 2 is set for a June 15, 2018 release.

Another sequel which hasn't taken quite so long to get off the ground is RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET: WRECK-IT RALPH 2. Can we do something about that title? The film will find Ralph (John C. Reilly) and Vanellope (Sarah Silverman) venturing into the wild world of the internet after their game breaks down and they find themselves in need of a replacement part. The pair will be guided by  a "trend-aholic algorithm" named Yesss who will be voiced by Taraji P. Henson (HIDDEN FIGURES). Also of note, the sequel will bring all of the Disney princesses together in one film.

In a clip screened at D23, Vanellope comes across all of the Disney princesses while on a website named OhMyDisney.com. She's hoping to stir up some trouble, but as Vanellope interacts with the princesses, "in ways that in rapid succession lovingly skewer the history and tropes of Disney animated classics and princess," she finds that she develops a respect for them, but still gives them a wardrobe change. Those princesses will be voiced by many of the original voices for those characters, including Jodi Benson as Ariel, Paige O'Hara as Belle, Linda Larkin as Jasmine, Irene Bedard as Pocahontas, Anika Noni Rose as Tiana, Mandy Moore as Rapunzel, Kelly Macdonald as Merida, Auli'i Cravalho as Moana, and Kristen Bell as Anna, all who took the stage at D23 to the great delight of the crowd. RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET: WRECK-IT RALPH 2 will hit theaters on November 21, 2018.

It was also revealed that Josh Cooley (INSIDE OUT) will be the director of TOY STORY 4, which he was previously set to co-direct alongside John Lasseter. The Pixar chief will still remain on as a producer. The fourth installment of the TOY STORY franchise is set for a June 21, 2019 release. Pixar also teased a new project from Dan Scanlon (MONSTERS UNIVERSITY) which will be set in a suburban fantasy world where unicorns are so prevalent that they're like rodents. There will be no humans in the story, only creatures like elves, trolls, and sprites, "anything that would be on the side of a van in the 70's," joked Scanlon. The untitled film will "tell the story of two teenage elf brothers whose father died when they were too young to remember him. But thanks to the little magic still left in the world, the boys embark on a quest that will allow them a chance to spend one last magical day with their father." Disney also screened a preview of OLAF'S FROZEN ADVENTURE, a twenty-one minute holiday-themed short which will debut in theaters Pixar's COCO on November 22, 2017.
