A couple of days ago brought us the shocking news that Ruby Rose would be vacating the lead role of Kate Kane on Batwoman after one season but what was left unanswered was the why. Rose and Warner Bros. Television along with the powers that be that are involved with the show gave their obligatory statements about being "thankful" and that this decision wasn't "easy" but fans knew there had to be a specific reason why this union just didn't work out. Today, news has emerged that explains why Rose may have made the decision and if reports are to be believed, this was a mutual decision between the performer and production.
According to sources, via "Variety", it appears that this simply wasn't the right fit for its star & the production. Rose was unhappy with the long hours required of her as a series lead, which led to a lot of friction on set. As this tension escalated, it was decided by her, the network, and studio, Warner Bros. Television, that a parting of ways was best.
Sources via "TVLine" doubled down on this reasoning by saying "It wasn't 100-percent her decision. It was a breakup. She wasn't happy working on the show, and did that make her fun to work with? No. So everyone decided it would be in the best interests of the show, and for all concerned if they parted ways. It just wasn't a good fit."
The "TVLine" source goes on to explain that Rose was distressed by the long hours demanded of a lead TV role and did not acclimate well to life in Vancouver (where the show is shot). The role marked the first full-time series gig for the actress, following her debut during the Arroverse crossover in December of 2018. Rose was also no stranger to television but it was for a smaller arc on Netflix's Orange Is the New Black.
Now before we cast stones at her for being "lazy" or saying she "should've known better" before taking the job, stories of the long & stressful shoots on the Arrowverse shows have been shared by many of its stars. Despite coming from Orange is the New Black, Rose wasn't the lead and the hours were likely not strenuous. From there she took on supporting roles in films, most notably in JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 2 & THE MEG. Both were action-oriented which means Rose is up to that task, but again, they were supporting roles. In everyday life, many of us take on more than we can handle sometimes, believing we can do it when in reality we may be in a bit over our heads. I honestly think that's what happened here. She bit off more than she could chew & decided to step down when the working relationship was growing toxic on all sides. I'm also assuming that the on-set injury she suffered which resulted in surgery that almost led to paralysis, didn't help matters, even though all involved say this reason alone didn't lead to her departure.
Batwoman has already been renewed for season two and they're searching for a recast now. Maybe they need to go the more unknown route. As names go, Rose was arguably the biggest name to sign on as a lead on one of the Arrowverse shows. Usually the small-screen DC series snags an up-and-comer that sticks around for seasons on end like Stephen Amell, Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoist. Unknown & hungry for a gig might be the best bet here.
What are YOUR thoughts on these reports? Should they cast an unknown for season two?
