We are still over a year and a half away from Pixar's FINDING NEMO sequel FINDING DORY but new details about the animated movie are starting to trickle in. What we know so far is that Pixar was working on a new ending for the sequel due to the backlash against SeaWorld following the horrific details revealed in the documentary BLACKFISH. On top of that, the story will be focused on Dory (Ellen DeGeneres) and her journey to be reunited with her family.
Pixar president Jim Morris has now revealed that a big part of the film will take place at the Marine Biology Institute of California, a huge rehabilitation complex for marine and aquarium life. Dory discovers that she was born and raised there, only to be released into the ocean when she was young. He went on to say the sequel takes place six months after the first movie, and one day Dory, now living in the same reef as the clown fishes, goes with Nemo on a class trip to see manta rays migrate back home, which in turn makes her feel home sick and begins her journey to find her parents. I'm not sure how long or widespread the journey will be considering it sounds like it takes place within one location, but I'll bet Pixar knows what they're doing.
It will be interesting to see how the sequel plays out considering the audience for FINDING NEMO will be thirteen years older. That’s the benefit of home viewing in this case though; I’ve shown Nemo to my nephews half a dozen times and I’m sure I’ll be dragging them to FINDING DORY on day. I mean, they will be dragging me, yes, that will stick.
FINDING DORY swims into theaters on June 17, 2016. If you still haven't seen BLACKFISH, please seek it out.
