I’ve never seen DEATH NOTE the anime, though I’ve always loved the premise. The idea that just writing someone’s name in a book leads to their death, and the implications of that, seems to lend itself to many interesting situations. Add on to that a cat-and-mouse game with a wiley detective, and you have the makings of a great show. So there’s no guarantee that Netflix’s American live-action remake from Adam Wingard (YOU’RE NEXT) will be any good, but it at least comes from a seemingly strong foundation.
Now, with the release date coming up, Netflix has revealed another character poster, this one for main character Light Turner. Let’s take a look:
Now the casting of Nat Wolff as Light has caused some controversy over “white-washing”, which had some valid complaints (namely, why does “American” automatically equal “white”), but damn if he doesn’t look like the anime character to me at first glance. Either way, I’m willing to reserve judgement on his performance until I see the film itself.
Meanwhile, DEATH NOTE will begin streaming on Netflix August 25th.
