THR has reported that a new Alien movie is in development over at 20th Century Studios for the Hulu streaming service. This will be an original standalone feature set to be written and directed by Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead). Ridley Scott will produce the new Alien movie through his Scott Free banner.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but THR’s sources say that Fede Alvarez actually pitched a take for a new Alien movie to Ridley Scott years ago. Scott remembered the idea and called Alvarez last year to ask if he was still willing to make the movie. 20th Century Studios president Steve Asbell said that they picked up the project “purely off the strength of Fede’s pitch” and teased that it’s “just a really good story with a bunch of characters you haven’t seen before.“
Although some might turn their nose up upon hearing that the new Alien movie is destined for Hulu, Steve Asbell said that it will actually be the best thing for the project. Rather than tone down any edginess for a mainstream theatrical audience, Asbell said that “It’s not a film that has to be all things to all people with those gargantuan budgets. They get to be authentically what they are. And this is closer to its genre roots.” I’d just love to be scared by the xenomorph again and as much as I love Ridley Scott, I’m excited what a new voice could bring to the franchise.
When Disney first acquired 20th Century Fox, they announced that they would “continue to create new stories” in the Alien franchise, but I really didn’t think that we’d get so many. This new Alien movie isn’t the only Alien project in development for Hulu as they’re also a TV series set to be developed by Fargo creator Noah Hawley. The project is still coming together but it could debut on FX on Hulu as early as 2023.
