Netflix to unlock the horror of their Locke & Key series this February

After several years of trying to unlock the mystery behind launching an adaptation of author Joe Hill (NOS4A2, HORNS) and artist Gabriel Rodriguez's comic book series Locke & Key, Netflix has announced that the series will premiere on the streaming network come February 7, 2020.

LOCKE & KEY centers around Tyler (Conner Jessup), Kinsey (Emilia Jones), and Bode Locke (Jackson Robert Scott), three siblings who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Maine only to find the house has magical keys that grant them a vast array of potentially dangerous powers and abilities. What the Locke family doesn't know, is that there's a devilish demon who lives in the shadow's of their home who desires the keys, and will stop at nothing to posses them.

In addition to Jessup, Jones, and Scott, the upcoming adaptation also stars Bill Heck, Laysla De Oliveira, Thomas Mitchell Barnet, Griffin Gluck, and Coby Bird. Author of the series, Joe Hill, will produce, alongside Carlton Cuse, Meredith Averill, and Andy and Barbara Muschietti. 

“It’s had a long eventful journey to screen,” Hill recently told Entertainment Weekly. “There was a previous attempt to bring it to TV at Hulu and before that, the guys at Fox made an effort. But I think the third time’s the charm. I’ve seen the whole series — still rough cuts, unfinished special effects, and all the rest of it — and it’s very Netflixy in the best possible way.”

Normally the idea that we haven't heard much about Netflix's adaptation of LOCKE & KEY up until this point would give me pause. However, knowing that Hill has remained passionate about bringing his and Rodriguez's terrifying vision to screen through so many production woes is reassuring. It also comforts me to know that talents the likes of Carlton Cuse (JACK RYAN, THE RETURNED) and IT franchise duo Andy and Barbara Muschietti have spearheaded the series' production. One things for sure, Locke & Key has an absurdly rabid fanbase among horror comic book readers, and they'll be watching this adaptation very closely for any short cuts or shenanigans. In truth, I hope that LOCKE & KEY debuts to incredible numbers on Netflix, as there's lots of story to be told across the horror property's several volumes.
