Netflix to stream new Star Trek series after all, except in the U.S & Canada

It feels good to be excited about Star Trek once again, the buzz surrounding STAR TREK BEYOND has been fairly positive, a fourth film has already been announced, and next year will see the return of Star Trek to television, in other words, a good time to be a Star Trek fan. The new Star Trek series is currently in development and production will kick off in Toronto this fall and give us "new crews, new villains, new heroes, and new worlds," but there's a twist, the series will only be available in the US on CBS All Access – the network's digital subscription video-on-demand and live streaming service.

This move struck many fans the wrong way as it means that there's yet another subscription service which wants you to fork over your cash every month, as for the rest of the world, Netflix has got your back. Netflix announced today that they have picked up the international streaming rights for the upcoming Star Trek series, which is good news for everyone not currently residing in the U.S and Canada. Netflix will make each episode available 24 hours after its U.S. premiere. Additionally, the streaming service will be making every episode of the existing live-action Star Trek series, which includes Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, and Star Trek: Enterprise, available around the world by the end of 2016.

LOS ANGELES and AMSTERDAM– July 18, 2016 – Netflix and CBS Studios International today announced a landmark international licensing agreement for the new “Star Trek” television series. Netflix will be the exclusive premiere home of “Star Trek” in 188 countries (excluding the US and Canada). Each episode of the new series will be available globally within 24 hours of its U.S. premiere.

Additionally, all 727 existing episodes of the iconic “Star Trek” television library – including “Star Trek: The Original Series,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” “Star Trek: Voyager” and “Star Trek: Enterprise” will be available on Netflix around the world by the end of 2016.

The all-new “Star Trek” will begin production in Toronto in September for its January 2017 premiere. The iconic and influential global franchise will return to television for the first time since 2005 with a new ship, new characters and new missions, while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation.
