Netflix’s Dark Crystal series almost finished filming

Last May, we let you guys know that THE INCREDIBLE HULK director Louis Leterrier will be teaming up with Netflix to produce, along with the Jim Henson company, a 10-episode prequel series to the eternally freaky puppet flick called THE DARK CRYSTAL: AGE OF RESISTANCE. And today we have word via Brian Henson himself that the series is moving right along.

Henson recently spoke a DragonCon about the new series. Not only when it takes place in relationship to the original Jim Henson film, but just where in the production process the series is at the moment. Oh, and he also says the show has been produced without CGI, but real puppets and real sets!

Brian Henson:

It’s been shooting since last November — it’s so cool that Netflix could get behind it in such a big way so that we can do it RIGHT. I say we, but I’ve been doing Happytime Murders, so it’s really my sister’s [Lisa Henson] and Halle Stanford‘s project. They’ve really put together a great, great time in London. And I’ll be honest, I thought those days were gone. I thought by the ’80s, the idea of being able to walk into a stage and see an incredible fantasy world realized was just long gone because of CG and everything like that. But they’ve REALLY done it right. It’s GREAT. The workmanship is just stunning, the artistic quality is RIGHT THERE again; what I thought maybe was lost, it’s still there. They’ll be shooting for another few weeks, and then there will be a huge amount of post-production.

Henson on if this new series is a prequel or sequel:

We’ve said it’s a prequel, and it’s not an immediate prequel, so it doesn’t end when the movie started. It takes place significantly earlier than when the movie took place.

THE DARK CRYSTAL: AGE OF RESISTANCE returns to the world of Thra with an all-new adventure. The 10-episode series from The Jim Henson Company which begins

When three Gelfling discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis’ power, they set out on an epic journey to ignite the fires of rebellion and save their world.

There's no word on just when this new series will be hitting the streaming giant. But as soon as we hear more the prequel show we will make sure to pass along word. Until then let us know how excited you are for the series below!
