Netflix renews The Umbrella Academy for a second season

Netflix’s new comic book series THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY didn’t quite have the same level of hype behind it that, say,  THE DEFENDERS did, but still, a loyal base of viewers carried the show as it became a solid hit for service. Thanks to those dedicated viewers the series has been renewed for a second season by Netflix, and all of the major cast including Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, and Justin Min will be reprising their roles.

Netflix’s press release regarding the show’s renewal also confirmed that showrunner and executive producer Steve Blackman will also be returning for season two, as will EPs Jeff F. King, Mike Richardson, Keith Goldberg, Gerard Way (Co-EP), and Gabriel Bá (Co-EP). Like the first season, the second will comprise of 10 hour-long episodes that follow the Hargreeves family, siblings who each have extraordinary gifts and who reunite to solve the mystery of their adoptive father’s death…and to stop the apocalypse, of course.

While Netflix doesn’t reveal viewer data and ratings, the series did receive great reviews from critics and audiences, who mostly praised the cast, story and visuals. The streaming service has been busy canceling their other comics-based shows like DAREDEVIL, LUKE CAGE and more, but they’re possibly still looking to stay in that same business by continuing on with a lesser known series like UMBRELLA ACADEMY. There are two series of six-issue comics in the “Umbrella” run, the first being “The Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite,” and the second “The Umbrella Academy: Dallas.” After almost a decade of gestation, the first issue of the third series, “Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion,” was released October 2018.

Here's a synopsis for season one:

On the same day in 1989, forty-three infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by a billionaire who creates The Umbrella Academy and prepares his "children" to save the world. Now, the six surviving members reunite upon the news of their father's passing and must work together to solve a mystery surrounding his death. But the estranged family begins to come apart due to their divergent personalities and abilities, not to mention the imminent threat of a global apocalypse. The Umbrella Academy is based on the comic book series created and written by Gerard Way, illustrated by Gabriel Bá, and published by Dark Horse Comics. The show is produced by UCP for Netflix, with Steve Blackman serving as executive producer and showrunner, and additional EPs Jeff F. King, Mike Richardson, Keith Goldberg, Gerard Way, and Gabriel Bá.

Season one of THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY is on Netflix now.
