Just weeks after Paramount Pictures, Tom Hardy and Channing Tatum dropped out of J.C. Chandor's TRIPLE FRONTIER and seemingly shelved the movie for good, it appears that there may be some life left in the project after all. Deadline reports that there have been ongoing conversations with "several suitors" in regards to rescuing TRIPLE FRONTIER, and that the talks with Netflix are the most promising at the moment.
Obviously nothing is set in stone and Deadline mentions that TRIPLE FRONTIER still needs to formally disengage from Paramount, but should this deal with Netflix go through, it's said that the streaming service would offer the lead roles vacated by Tom Hardy and Channing Tatum to Ben Affleck and Casey Affleck. The pair would join Mahershala Ali (MOONLIGHT), who, at the moment, is still attached to the film. The reason for the departure of the previous leads, as well as the studio, apparently came about when J.C. Chandor's recent draft of Mark Boal's script didn't exactly thrill Tom Hardy or Channing Tatum, with Hardy in particular asking for "extensive changes." If Channing Tatum and Tom Hardy didn't bite, I can't imagine that the Affleck brothers would either without some changes. Still, this news does offer a faint avenue of hope for those who need a little TRIPLE FRONTIER in their lives.
TRIPLE FRONTIER has been through its fair share of issues over the years; the project was originally intended to be Mark Boal and Kathryn Bigelow's follow-up to THE HURT LOCKER and even attracted interest from actors like Tom Hanks, Will Smith and Leonardo DiCaprio. Once the decision was made to move forward with ZERO DARK THIRTY instead, the film was put on hold before Kathryn Bigelow eventually left TRIPLE FRONTIER behind altogether. The film is set in the "notorious border zone between Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil where the Iguazu and Parana rivers converge — making “la triple frontera” difficult to monitor and a haven for organized crime."
As for future projects, Casey Affleck has A GHOST STORY set to debut on July 7, 2017 and Ben Affleck has JUSTICE LEAGUE on November 17, 2017.
