Netflix greenlights a second season of The Witcher ahead of December debut

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Faster than you can say Geralt of Rivia, Netflix has ordered a second season of The Witcher ahead of next month's release. The streaming giant announced the news just this afternoon via their official Twitter account:

The Witcher television show is based off of a series of fantasy novels written by European author Andrzej Sapkowski, although most audiences know the story from the best-selling series of videogames. The third game in the series has sold over thirty-three million copies worldwide to date. However, for those of you unfamiliar with the books or the video games, here's a brief synopsis from Netflix:

“The Witcher is an epic tale of fate and family. The story of the intertwined destinies of three individuals in the vast world of The Continent, where humans, elves, witchers, gnomes, and monsters battle to survive and thrive, and where good and evil is not easily identified.”

Actor Henry Cavill (MAN OF STEEL) takes on the main role of Geralt of Rivia, a lone monster hunter who is tasked with protecting a young princess from a powerful sorceress. From the trailers it looks like Cavill is absolutely chewing the scenery as the badass Geralt. The action looks decidedly epic and I'm getting a strong Game of Thrones vibe from this show. Netflix is certainly hoping The Witcher will be as successful as the aforementioned series from George R.R. Martin. Renewing The Witcher for a second season before the first even drops is an encouraging sign. The second season is set to begin production in London in early 2020 with a planned 2021 release.

Netflix's first season of The Witcher is comprised of eight episodes and hits the streaming service December 20. A new STAR WARS film and an epic fantasy series dropping on the same day??? It's a nerd's dream come true!

What do you guys make of this news? Are you excited for The Witcher? Pleased that there will be a second season? Sound off in the comments below!
