Streaming services are pretty guarded about their viewership data unless they see an opportunity to brag and Netflix is doing just that with the latest release of their streaming data that showcases the massive success of shows like Bridgeton the service and some of their original films like Extraction.
CEO Ted Sarandos, who was speaking at the Code Conference at the Beverly Hilton yesterday, spoke of being more transparent and a part of that transparency involved some slides of full metrics that showed that season one of Shonda Rhimes’ Bridgerton is the most initially watched and most engaged with series on the platform. The chart showed that 82 million accounts accessed Bridgerton within its first 28 days on the service and logged 625 viewership minutes. Additionally, Sarandos revealed that Extraction, starring Chris Hemsworth, was the most-watched film on Netflix, and 2018’s Bird Box, starring Sandra Bullock, was their most engaged with feature. You can check an image of the slides below!
An interesting takeaway from the Netflix data reveal came when it was asked if the multimillion-dollar overall deals the streamer has embarked on with top talent like Shonda Rhimes, Ryan Murphy, Kevin Hart, and Greg Berlanti, to name a few, has been worth the investment. Sarandos responded by saying, “It’s way too early to tell – you have to look back on this thing over many years” but he made it no secret that Shonda’s deal with Netflix will be successful just on Bridgerton alone. Much like she was at ABC for many years following hits like Grey’s Anatomy and How To Get Away With Murder, she is the true darling of Netflix at the moment.
When speaking on the success of Stranger Things and its solid performance on both charts for its third season, Sarandos pointed to franchises being good for the platform but you also want hits. He called Stranger Things “a franchise being born” and even hinted at spinoffs that could come out of that series.
Sarandos also took a brief moment to speak on the Disney and Scarlett Johansson debacle regarding the release of Black Widow. After being pressed on the matter Sarandos said, “I watch these things as a spectator – I would have said this or that. I’m fortunate that we have not been in those shoes.” His parting words on the matter seem to hint that he supported Johansson’s position by saying “talent has to be respected and compensated.”
