If you were a fan of Netflix's The Society or I Am Not Okay With This, then I've got bad news for you. Deadline has reported that the streaming service has elected to cancel both shows, meaning that they won't be returning for a second season. In the case of The Society, that series had already been renewed for a second season, and while I Am Not Okay With This hadn't received an official renewal, scripts were in the process of being written with the expectation of a second season.
As for why Netflix made this choice, well, you can place the blame on COVID-19. Deadline's sources said that "uncertainty around production dates and balancing the availabilities of a large cast like The Society, coupled with unexpected budget increases due to COVID led to the decisions." In a statement, Netflix said, "We’ve made the difficult decision not to move forward with second seasons of The Society and I Am Not Okay With This. We’re disappointed to have to make these decisions due to circumstances created by COVID, and we are grateful to these creators, including: Jonathan Entwistle, Christy Hall, Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, Dan Cohen and Josh Barry at 21 Laps Entertainment for I Am Not Okay With This; Chris Keyser, Marc Webb and Pavlina Hatoupis for The Society; and all the writers, casts and crews who worked tirelessly to make these shows for our members around the world." We'll likely see more of these types of cancellations as studios try to ease back into the swing of things and attempt to cut their losses from the pandemic.
The Society followed "a group of teenagers who are mysteriously transported to a facsimile of their wealthy New England town, left without any trace of their parents. As they struggle to figure out what has happened to them and how to get home, they must establish order and form alliances if they want to survive." I Am Not Okay With This starred Sophia Lillis as Sydney, a jaded 15-year-old teenager who carries her share of secrets, such as the crush she has on her best friend Dina, the bizarre truth behind her father's death, as well as her telekinetic powers.
