Ever since the original concept art and confirmation of Neill Blomkamp taking on the directing duties for the next installment of the ALIEN franchise it seems we're getting new word on the film every few days. It's been an almost non-stop barrage of information, even though very little of it has clued us in to what we can expect for ALIEN 5. Now Empire has posted an interview with Blomkamp where he let it be known that his sequel will not, in his own words, “tread on the toes” of Ridley Scott’s pseudo-prequel PROMETHEUS 2, which is being concurrently developed alongside Blomkamp's ALIEN film.
And although Blomkamp's ALIEN won't be treading on the toes of Scott's PROMETHEUS sequel, Blomkamp shares that he did have to make a change for that to be true. The director explained…
"I changed the one thing [Scott] felt was bumping Prometheus a little bit. One thing that makes me feel good about it is that Ridley is producing it. He likes the idea of what I want to make.”
Blomkamp also reiterates that "the first two films are the ones that I care about," and also that his film could easily be called ALIEN 3, which still implies there might be some retconning that happens when it comes to the first ALIEN 3, even though the director has stated previously that he's not trying to undo ALIEN 3 or ALIEN: RESURRECTION.
As for what his ALIEN film will be titled, Blomkamp shares that he has a bold title in mind, but we'll have to see if it sticks. Blomkamp states…
“I sent what I wanted as the title to Ridley. It’s kinda quite bold, and he was like, ‘I really like that.’ So I’m gonna test it, I don’t think it’s gonna work, though. I have my own idea but it gives away too much if I say the title. But in the event that it doesn’t work, I’m dead in the water…”
Hmm. Let the guesses begin!
It's only Monday but I'm sure we'll be hearing more on ALIEN 5 this week if the past few weeks are any indication. Seems there's a lot of interest in this film so we'll do our best to keep you up to date on things regarding this project.
