Several years ago, Neill Blomkamp shared a few pieces of unofficial concept art for an ALIENS sequel that he had been dreaming up; the internet went wild for them and the project soon became a reality when Fox green-lit the film and hired Blomkamp to direct. It was an exciting possibility which would have seen Sigourney Weaver return as Ellen Ripley, but when Ridley Scott's ALIEN: COVENANT moved forward, Neill Blomkamp's ALIENS sequel was shelved. Given the lackluster reception which ALIEN: COVENANT received, perhaps we'll see Blomkamp's sequel return to life. Likely not, but a man can dream. The director has posted several new pieces of concept art for the project on Instagram and Twitter, which he says were largely produced throughout 2015.
As for the future of the ALIEN franchise, it's not exactly clear where it's headed after ALIEN: COVENANT underperformed at the box-office, but Ridley Scott believes that the studio should continue with the story that COVENANT left dangling. "I think they have to. There’s no reason why Alien should now not be on the same level for fans as Star Trek and Star Wars," Scott said. "So I think the next step as to where we go is, do we sustain the Alien (series) with the evolution of the beast or do we reinvent something else? I think you need to have an evolution on this famous beast because he’s the best monster ever, really." Although the future of the franchise isn't as clear as it once was, Ridley Scott still wants to do more of them.
I would like to; they’re crazy if they don’t. David is a fantastic villain. I love what (Michael Fassbender) did in Covenant. But it’s f—ing hard, dude. We lifted Alien out of a ditch and made Prometheus.
What do you folks think? Should the ALIEN franchise continue with ALIEN: CONVENANT 2, Neill Blomkamp's scrapped sequel, or something else entirely?
