Neil Patrick Harris & Yahya Abdul-Mateen II discuss working on The Matrix 4

THE MATRIX 4 had been filming in the San Francisco for about a month and the production was preparing to move on to Berlin when the pandemic caused things to shut down. Now the cast and crew are back at work and cameras are rolling in Berlin… and we still know very little about what director Lana Wachowski has in store for us with this one.

We do know that Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jada Pinkett Smith are reprising their roles from the previous films, and they're joined in the cast by franchise newcomers Neil Patrick Harris, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Eréndira Ibarra, Jonathan Groff, Andrew Caldwell, Ellen Hollman, Brian J. Smith, Max Riemelt, and Chris Sean Reid. Beyond that, all we have to go on is that the actors have said that the film's script, which Wachowski wrote with Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell, is "beautiful".

During an interview on SiriusXM's The Jess Cagle Show, Harris said that he has a "small part" in the film, and that fans should expect THE MATRIX 4 to have a different look than the original trilogy:

I think (Wachowski) has a great inclusive energy and her style has shifted visually from what she had done to what she is currently doing."

Harris also described the film as "ambitious", and confirmed that it does indeed feature wirework in the action scenes.

Speaking with Collider, Abdul-Mateen said the film is "something special" and that his

reaction to the script [was], ‘Wow, people are really gonna like this. I like this. People are really gonna like this.’ It’s different and it’s the same, you know, at the same time. It’s a really, really very intelligent blend of what we want and what we may not know that we want."

So we still don't really know what's going on in THE MATRIX 4. It's more of the same, and yet different.

The film isn't scheduled to reach theatres until April 1, 2022, so they still have plenty of time to reveal more information before the release date gets here.
