Neil Marshall to direct the English language remake of Troll Hunter

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Neil Marshall, director of DOG SOLDIERS, THE DESCENT, DOOMSDAY, and the brilliant GAME OF THRONES episode “Blackwater”, will now be taking over the English language remake of the 2010 Norweigan found footage movie TROLLHUNTER. The project was long attached to Guillermo Del Toro and will shift to Marshall as soon as he finishes directing duties on the upcoming season of GAME OF THRONES (hint, it is a major episode).

TROLL HUNTER will begin production in early 2014. The remake will be rewritten by Marshall. Here is the plot synopsis of the original Norwegian film:

TROLLHUNTER focused on a group of students investigating a series of mysterious bear killings. They follow a mysterious hunter into the deep woods, learning along the way that he is a troll hunter, and that the creatures killing those bears might not confine their appetites to that species only.

Will the remake follow the found footage/documentary style of the original? That remains to be seen. That is not a format that Marshall has used to date but that is not to say he wouldn’t make a switch for the right project. I was a big fan of the original movie which had just the right mix of humor and horror and pretty impressive effects. Marshall has made some enjoyable movies so far, THE DESCENT likely being his best. I am looking forward to what he can do with TROLL HUNTER.
