Neil Gaiman's THE SANDMAN is finally coming to the screen in a live-action Netflix series. The massive financial deal is being described as the most expensive TV series that DC Entertainment has ever done and Allan Heinberg (Wonder Woman, Grey's Anatomy) will write and serve as showrunner.
Gaiman will executive produce alongside THE DARK KNIGHT RISES and BLADE: TRINITY screenwriter David S. Goyer. No word on just how many episodes the planned first season will have.
Warner Bros. evidently pitched THE SANDMAN TV series to multiple outlets, HBO, who did not make a play for the series, given the massive price tag attached. I don't know about you but I'm excited as hell to see Neil Gaiman's THE SANDMAN comics coming to Netflix. There have been rumors of a movie based on the series for years now so it is great to see it finally coming together in this day and age of binge-TV.
For those of you out there that might not know, THE SANDMAN is a comic book series written by Neil Gaiman and artists Sam Kieth, Mike Dringenberg, Jill Thompson, Shawn McManus, Marc Hempel, and Michael Zulli, with lettering by Todd Klein and covers by Dave McKean. It is one of the first few graphic novels ever to be on the New York Times Best Seller list, along with Maus, Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns.
It tells the story of Dream of the Endless, who rules over the world of dreams. The main character of The Sandman is Dream, also known as Morpheus and other names, who is one of the seven Endless. The other Endless are Destiny, Death, Desire, Despair, Delirium (formerly Delight) and Destruction (also known as 'The Prodigal'). The original series ran for 75 issues from January 1989 to March 1996.
