NBC is developing a series based on the John Ritter comedy Problem Child

When I was nine, I saw the movie PROBLEM CHILD in the theater. Yeah, I found it funny because my sense of humor was all about profanity and pratfalls. But, even at that age I knew it was a bad movie. Now, twenty-four years later, NBC has put their collective minds together and come up with the bright idea to reboot the comedy film series as a sitcom.

Deadline reports that Scot Armstrong will write the sitcom take on the John Ritter film. Armstrong has worked on films such as THE HANGOVER PART II, STARSKY AND HUTCH, and OLD SCHOOL. Needless to say, his talents aim towards the raunchier side of comedy. While PROBLEM CHILD was rated PG, it was excessively vulgar, sexual, and violent for a kid’s movie. The profanity alone would never get by by today’s standards.

NBC has lingered in last place and is on the lookout for series that can help revitalize it’s viewership, but I am not sure PROBLEM CHILD is the way to go. The lone appeal of the films was the anti-social behavior of the kids which may not be looked at as kindly by today’s audiences. There is no expected airdate for the new PROBLEM CHILD, but if it makes it past the pilot stage, we will let you know.
