National Treasure 3: Jerry Bruckheimer says the script is “really good” and awaits Cage’s approval

Disney+ will be releasing an upcoming series based on the 2007 Nicolas Cage film, National Treasure and its sequel. This was much to the chagrin of movie franchise fans who pined for a trilogy. Worry no more, Cage fans! A script for National Treasure 3 has been written and is simply waiting for Cage’s approval.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who is involved with both the movies and Disney+ series, recently spoke about the franchise’s future in an interview while promoting the summer blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick with Comicbook.com. Bruckheimer has confirmed that a script for a third National Treasure film is complete. As they refine a final draft, he eagerly awaits Cage’s reaction as the producer thinks they have a winner on their hands.

In the interview, Bruckheimer is quoted, “Let’s hope, we’re working on the script right now. Hopefully, [Cage] likes it, but it’s really good. So I think we’ll get it to him shortly.” Although the show is currently at the forefront, it will feature the appearances of certain characters from the movie. Cage gave a Q&A back in April while promoting The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent where he was asked about a possible third entry, and he didn’t seem very confident about it, “No, the priority was to turn it into a TV show so I would say probably not.”

Cage would also explain in a GQ interview that the string of underperforming movies he made after the second movie cooled off his status a bit, “The phone stopped ringing. It was like,’ What do you mean we’re not doing National Treasure 3? It’s been 14 years, why not? Well, Sorcerer’s Apprentice didn’t work, and Ghost Rider didn’t really sell tickets. And Drive Angry just came and went.”

The people behind the Disney+ series are also hoping to get Cage to eventually make an appearance on the show. After years of false starts with a third film in the series, it will be good to see Cage step back in this role. Not that he went anywhere.

What do you think? Do you want to see a third National Treasure?
