Percy Jackson, Disney, Rick Riodan

Great Odin's beard! It's been revealed that Disney+ is officially developing a Percy Jackson series adaptation. Book series author Rick Riodan announced the project via Twitter on Thursday alongside his wife Becky. Word of Percy Jackson bringing the thunder to Disney+ has been circulating for quite a while, shortly after Becky Riodan prompted a #DisneyAdaptPercyJackson Twitter campaign, giving demigods the signal to profess their desire to see Percy and his friends bring their epic adventures to the family-friendly streamer.

Previously, Rick Riodan used the same #DisneyAdaptPercyJackson call to arms when he live tweeted his meeting with the House of Mouse, an event which made fans of the series hungry for a long-form retelling of the character's epic story.

“We are very excited about the idea of a live-action series of the highest quality, following the storyline of the original Percy Jackson five-book series, starting with The Lightning Thief in season one,” Riordan wrote on Twitter. The author than promised fans of the five-book series that his wife, Becky, would be directly involved “in person in every aspect of the show.”

For the moment, no further details related to the series have been revealed at this time. That said, we do know that the series will focus on the life and times of Percy Jackson, a young man who discovers he's the the descendant of a Greek god and becomes wrapped up in all manner of godly shenanigans and disputes.

Here's the official description for the first book in the series, The Lightning Thief:

Twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is on the most dangerous quest of his life. With the help of a satyr and a daughter of Athena, Percy must journey across the United States to catch a thief who has stolen the original weapon of mass destruction — Zeus’ master bolt. Along the way, he must face a host of mythological enemies determined to stop him. Most of all, he must come to terms with a father he has never known, and an Oracle that has warned him of betrayal by a friend.

The Lightning Thief struck book store shelves on July 1, 2005, a few weeks shy of when J.K. Rowling had unleashed the sixth book in her Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. In other words, Percy Jackson had made the scene at perhaps the height of Pottermania, giving fans of fantasy adventure fiction yet another reason to get lost in stories filled with fanciful action, magical characters, and surprises waiting around every chapter break.

Furthermore, this isn't the first time that Percy Jackson has been adapted for the screen. In 2010, director Chris Columbus unleashed PERCY JACKSON & THE OLYMPIANS: THE LIGHTNING THIEF in theaters. Then in 2013, director Thor Freudenthal's PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS crashed into cinemas. The film series made a combined total of $430 million worldwide, though apparently that was not enough to keep Percy and his friends in the movie making business.
