MAMA director Andy Muschietti and his producing partner/sister Barbara Muschietti are in talks to produce IN SHADOWS, a supernatural thriller to be written and directed by Alex and David Pastor. Described as a "twisted coming-of-age story", IN SHADOWS focuses on
Jason, a man who comes out of prison after serving 20 years for an unspeakable crime and is forced to confront the terrible events of his past that sent him there.
David Pastor gave a bit more detail, saying that it's
"…a dark tale where supernatural horror is a manifestation of the most mundane horror the characters face in their daily lives. Unfolding along two different timelines, the movie explores how the horrors of the past can haunt us all our lives and define us as adults."
Sounds interesting, especially when you add in the fact that Andy Muschietti compares it to NEAR DARK and LET THE RIGHT ONE IN in the way it "gives the genre a spin".
Speaking of horror haunting characters all their lives, the Muschiettis are also working on New Line Cinema's two-part adaptation of Stephen King's IT, on which Andy Muschietti replaced director Cary Fukunaga earlier this year. Barbara will be producing IT with Dan Lin, Roy Lee, Seth Grahame-Smith, and David Katzenberg.
The Muschiettis are hoping to film IT next summer, the easiest time of year to work with the cast of children half of the story requires, and Andy says that Will Poulter, the actor Fukunaga had chosen to play the evil clown Pennywise, remains the top contender for the role.
He added,
"King described '50s terror iconography. And I feel there’s a whole world now to rediscover, to update. There won't be mummies, werewolves. Terrors are going to be a lot more surprising."
Here's hoping the Muschiettis have an easier time with IT than Fukunaga did.
