Johnny Depp reemerged in front of movie and television fans last night, appearing as the astronaut mascot at the MTV Movie & TV Awards. Well, sort of. An apparently pre-recorded video of Depp’s head was planted on the body of the Moonperson (formerly known as the Moon Man) strung from the ceiling.
Johnny Depp made three brief appearances throughout the show. During his first appearance, he told the audience, “Hey, you know what? I needed the work.” Later on, he said, “I just want you guys to know I’m available for birthdays, bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs, weddings, wakes, any old thing you need. Anything. You name it.” Depp as a ring bearer sounds promising…
Depp, of course, hasn’t entirely been out of the spotlight. His trial against Amber Heard has cluttered headlines and was expectedly tabloid fodder. Depp’s appearance at the MTV Movie & TV Awards, however, was a welcome tongue-in-cheek cameo that showed Depp still wants to entertain audiences.
Throughout his career, Johnny Depp has won five MTV Movie & TV Awards. Three were for performances in the Pirates of the Caribbean series, while another was for Best Villain in Sweeney Todd. He also won the non-competitive MTV Generation Award, essentially a lifetime achievement award. His first nomination came for Best Comedic Performance in Benny & Joon but lost to Robin Williams for Mrs. Doubtfire.
Johnny Depp hasn’t turned up in a movie since 2020’s Minamata. He will return to the big screen as King Louis XV in next year’s La Favorite. He is also slated to direct Modigliani, about Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani. It will be his second directorial effort and first in 25 years, after 1997’s The Brave.
