PLOT: An alpha vampire posing as a DJ conspires to turn unsuspecting ravers into an army of undead on the night of a Blood Moon. The only thing that stands between him and the annihilation of the entire human race is the infamous vampire fighting Frog Brothers. Armed with double-barrel holy water balloon launchers and multi-arrow crossbows, Edgar and Alan Frog join forces to kick some blood-sucker butt.
REVIEW:Lost Boys: The Thirst is the Lost Boys 2 that “The Tribe” should have been. Totally different from the previous movie, this movie has a bit more of a comedic edge to it that reminds me a bit of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Every time Edgar Frog (Corey Feldman) sees something displeasing he gives a throaty, almost frog like, grunt that is done so often it made me chuckle. Mostly he groans about things that the audience would groan about too. Such as the Stephanie Meyer based Gwen (Tanit Phoenix) and her Twilight-ish romantic vampire novels. Speaking of Gwen, she must be the sexiest author of all f’n time. The girl has a body to kill for and the director takes full advantage of it. Having her in her underwear and skimpy bikini tight clothing for most of the movie, she is pretty god damned sexy.
The movie itself is very, very… very campy, on par with the recent Piranha 3D, it seems the day of the cheesy horror movie is back. Though this film was a fun movie I did have problems with quite a bit of the style choices that they made through out. The vampires in many of the scenes seemed to come straight out of the first Lost Boys movie… down to the leather jackets and 80’s hair do’s. Now I can’t say I’ve ever in my life gone to a rave, but the portrayal of these vampires just seemed out of place. They are supposed to be emo-goth types but still they had more of that 80’s punk/bikers look to them. One of the side characters is a former politician becomes Edgar’s weapons against the dead arms dealer. Though I can see the use of such a character, I found it odd that a man in political power would suddenly live in shanty in the middle of the desert, even if vampires previously had attacked him. There are just odd story elements such as these that just kind of threw me off and seemed a bit strange.
Despite the problems I had with the film I found myself really enjoying it by late in the second act. It’s definitely better than “The Tribe” bringing back more than just Edgar Frog this time around. There is a heart felt moment in which Edgar goes to the cemetery recognizes the death of Sam Emerson (the late Corey Haim) in a series of flash backs from the first film, it seemed like a little homage to the actor himself. Jamison Newlander returns as Alan Frog and he is all vamped out and in hiding.
The third act, in which Edgar, Alan, new sidekicks; Zoe, Lars, Claus and Gwen all go into an infiltrate the vampire rave turned out to actually be a fun time with an unexpected twist that makes you go “whaaaa?” for a second before a twist is fully revealed. I can’t say I saw it coming and I usually do. This time they just got me, probably because it was so glaringly obvious I just didn’t even notice.
Looking up some news I read recently that they are in talks about making another sequel or a TV show out of the Frog brothers if this movie does well. I actually think that would be a great idea! As a film this movie is a bit lacking, it is certainly is a lot of fun but it misses the mark here and there. But as a TV show this would be a great replacement left in the wake of the more tongue in cheek, self aware horror comedy genre that hasn’t really been tapped for a few years, the closest thing being Reaper on CW that was canceled last year.
This movie was a decent redemption to that abysmal sequel that was previously made. Maybe this one just tastes better cause the last one was so awful, but at least it’s a step in the right direction and worth a rent if you’re a fan of the original Lost Boys.
