It’s been all quiet on the WORLD WAR Z 2 front recently, with not much happening in way of production or news on the sequel to the Brad Pitt zombie flick. All that curiosity you have can now be put to sleep, as the producers of the movie, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, recently confirmed the movie is expected to start production in June 2019 with David Fincher directing and Brad Pitt returning to star.

The two producers were on the red carpet for their new movie, BEAUTIFUL BOY, and were stopped by Variety, and when asked about the movie Gardner confirmed WWZ2 would be kicking off in June, with Kleiner saying there was still a small bit of work to be done on the script from Denis Kelly (BLACK SEA, MATILDA).

The last solid news we heard about the movie was the confirmation of director David Fincher last year, who replaced director J.A. Bayona who left to go do this year’s JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM. Filming itself has gone through some schedule shifts, and though it was meant to start shooting this year it was delayed so Fincher could work on season two of MINDHUNTER. With a June production start in mind, we could see the movie in theaters as early as summer 2020.
The sequel has been discussed ever since the first movie came out in 2013, grossing over $200 million domestically. But over the course of the last few years, there has been a lot of writer and director shifts, with the original’s director, Marc Forster, not returning and the screenplay going through writers like Steven Knight (LOCKER, THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER’S WEB). Now it seems they're confident in the project enough to get it going soon, and with Fincher on board, this will be a fascinating project to keep an eye on. He hasn’t worked with that big of a budget since THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON ($150 million), and so much has changed with VFX since then, so if he’s on board consider me along for the ride. That all being said, I'll believe this movie is happening when I see Pitt on set with whatever horrid haircut they have him sporting this time.
