Will Ferrell on the plot of the scrapped Step Brothers sequel

Will Ferrell Step Brothers 2

Believe it or not, but we're quickly approaching the tenth anniversary of STEP BROTHERS, Adam McKay's film about two immature adult men, played by Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly,  who are forced to live together as brothers when their parents marry. The comedy has gone on to become an incredibly quotable cult-hit and rumblings of a sequel has emerged every so often. Unfortunately, Will Ferrell said earlier this year that "there are no plans" for a STEP BROTHERS sequel, but the actor recently revealed where the potential sequel would have taken the brothers while speaking with New York Daily News recently.

We talked about 'Step Brothers,' and then Adam and I got sidetracked with other things. We had a whole story where John and I follow our parents to live in a retirement community and try to convince them that we earned the right to retire as well.

It's certainly easy to see the potential for comedy in that scenario, but Will Ferrell again confirmed that there are not currently any plans for a STEP BROTHERS sequel. If the project does resurface in future, it wouldn't be the only belated sequel on Will Ferrell's filmography as the actor also developed ANCHORMAN 2: THE LEGEND CONTINUES with Adam McKay close to ten years after the release of the first. "The sequel thing is so funny because, we decided obviously to go down the road with 'Anchorman,' and we made what I thought was a really great sequel, really funny," Ferrell said. "The entertainment media and fans beg you, and beg you, and beg you for sequels, and then you make it and you definitely have a fraction that's like, 'Well, not as good as the first one.' So I guess it's a catch-22. It's a nice catch-22, because people love the movies in the first place." Although I wound up enjoying ANCHORMAN 2 nearly as much as the first, Ferrell is definitely correct that not all comedy sequels appease fans of the first. I'm looking at you ZOOLANDER 2.

Despite those sequel comments, Will Ferrell will next be seen in DADDY'S HOME 2 on November 10th.
