Wesley Snipes responds to Patton Oswalt’s wild stories from Blade: Trinity

It was announced last year that Marvel Studios are developing a reboot of BLADE that will star Mahershala Ali (True Detective), making the vampire hunter an official part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While I'm definitely excited to see how they plan on folding Blade into the MCU, this does seem to put to rest any hope of seeing Wesley Snipes reprise the role, which makes BLADE: TRINITY the actor's final appearance as the character.

Although BLADE: TRINITY is easily the worst installment of the BLADE trilogy, the film has spawned some outrageous behind-the-scenes stories, most of which came courtesy of Patton Oswalt. The comedian played Hedges in BLADE: TRINITY, a member of Hannibal King's (Ryan Reynolds) Nightstalkers, and nearly a decade ago, he spoke to The AV Club of Wesley Snipes' odd behavior on the set, which included spending most of his time smoking weed in his trailer and only communicating with director David Goyer through Post-It notes (which he signed, Blade). Worst of all, Oswalt alleged that Snipes had actually strangled Goyer after accusing him of racism. In a recent interview with The Guardian, Wesley Snipes denied Oswalt's story of him strangling Goyer.

Let me tell you one thing. If I had tried to strangle David Goyer, you probably wouldn’t be talking to me now. A black guy with muscles strangling the director of a movie is going to jail, I guarantee you. Did I go to jail for strangling him? Never happened.

When asked about the Post-It note story, Snipes started giggling but was apparently not amused. "Once again, Mr Oswalt is the authority. Hohoho! Why do people believe this guy’s version of this story? Answer me that," Snipes said. "This is part of the challenges that we as African Americans face here in America – these microaggressions. The presumption that one white guy can make a statement and that statement stands as true! Why would people believe his version is true? Because they are predisposed to believing the black guy is always the problem. And all it takes is one person, Mr Oswalt, who I really don’t know. I can barely remember him on the set, but it’s fascinating that his statement alone was enough to make people go: 'Yeah, you know Snipes has got a problem.'" The actor went on to add, "I remind you that I was one of the executive producers of the project. I had contractual director approval. I was not just the actor for hire. I had au-thor-i-ty to say, to dictate, to decide. This was a hard concept for a lot of people to wrap their heads around." Wesley Snipes will next be seen in COMING 2 AMERICA alongside Eddie Murphy, which is expected to debut on Amazon Prime Video on December 18, 2020.
