While his latest film, The French Dispatch, has yet to hit theaters, it seems like director Wes Anderson is already preparing to shoot his next feature, and he’s bringing back a couple of familiar faces. Variety reports that Anderson will be reuniting with his most frequent star, Bill Murray, for the Spain-set project, which is also set to co-star Tilda Swinton. Unfortunately, not much is known about the film other than its setting and its set to shoot in August.
While this may seem fast, bear in mind that Anderson finished shooting The French Dispatch back in 2019. However, as readers will undoubtedly recall, the film was delayed from April 3rd, 2020, all the way to October 22nd, 2021, due to Covid-19.
The French Dispatch just had its world premiere at Cannes this week, with the film logging an impressive 89% on Rotten Tomatoes based on twenty-seven reviews. It looks like some of the naysayers simply don’t care for Anderson’s style anymore, so if you’re a fan of his stuff (as I certainly am), The French Dispatch is one to be excited about.
I must admit that Anderson is among my favorite directors. It’s very rare these days to have a filmmaker whose style is so evocative that you could literally look at a single frame from one of his movies and immediately recognize Anderson’s style. While Murray and Swinton are the first two cast members announced for the project, I’m pretty confident that many of Anderson’s regulars will return. He indeed seems to inspire loyalty, with Murray having been in all of his films since Rushmore. I fully expect to see Owen Wilson, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman, and Frances McDormand show up in some capacity. My hope, however, is that Anderson finds another excellent role for Ralph Fiennes. His performance in The Grand Budapest Hotel is up there with Murray in Rushmore and Gene Hackman in The Royal Tennenbaums.
