Weekend Box Office Report: John Wick 3 kills the competition!

John Wick 3 kills it at #1!

Keanu Reeves slaughtered his way through the box office competition this weekend as JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 – PARABELLUM opened on top with an estimated $57 million!

The third time around for the titular semi-retired assassin nearly doubled the $30.4 domestic opening of JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 2 in 2017, and almost quadrupled the $14.4 million start of the original JOHN WICK in 2014.

The R-rated sequel has also already shot past the $43 million domestic total of the first JOHN WICK (while CHAPTER 2 finished with $92 million domestic and $171 million worldwide).

The new high-caliber action movie (also featuring Halle Berry, Ian McShane and Mark Dacascos) is also the second-biggest domestic opening for Reeves, coming in behind the $91.7 million start of THE MATRIX RELOADED back in 2003.

Reeves' resilient exterminator also pocketed $35.2 million from international audiences for a worldwide weekend of $92.2 million. Director Chad Stahelski's third time behind the camera for the complexities of the contract killer business cost a reported $55 million.

Critics were locked and loaded for the hunted hitman's bullet-riddled getaway, giving the movie an 89% average on Rotten Tomatoes. Take aim at the JoBlo review HERE.

After ruling the chart for three weekends, AVENGERS: ENDGAME moved to second place with $29.4 million. The most immense superhero team-up imaginable now has a domestic total of $770.8 million, snapping the $760 million finish of James Cameron's AVATAR out of existence (after sinking his TITANIC last week) to become the second-biggest release in domestic history behind the $936 million total of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS.

Marvel's $350 million era-spanning A-list adventure from directors Joe and Anthony Russo has collected a worldwide total of $2.61 billion, which puts it about $170 million away from the $2.78 billion finish of current global champion AVATAR.

In third place was the PG-rated comedy POKEMON DETECTIVE PIKACHU with $24.8 million, a 56% tumble from last weekend's opening. The $150 million videogame adaptation, with Ryan Reynolds providing the voice of the popular rabbit-thing, has a ten-day domestic total of $94 million and $287.4 million worldwide.

Opening in fourth place was the new comedy-drama A DOG'S JOURNEY with $8 million for the weekend.

The sentimental sequel of canine companions got a slower start than the $18.2 million opening of A DOG'S PURPOSE in 2017 (that movie ended up with $64.5 million domestic and $204 million worldwide). The latest good-doggy tale, again featuring human Dennis Quaid, has fetched $23 million worldwide so far.

Critics weren't sure whether to reward or scold the four-legged friends, giving the movie a 49% average on Rotten Tomatoes. You can pet the JoBlo review right HERE.

In fifth place was the PG-13 con-artist comedy THE HUSTLE with $6 million, scammed out of 53% of its opening last weekend. The Rebel Wilson/Anne Hathaway remake of DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS has a ten-day domestic total of $23.1 million and a worldwide total of $51.2 million, on a reported $31 million cost.

Dennis Quaid's other Top 10 release THE INTRUDER was in sixth place with $4 million, bringing the $8 million PG-13 thriller to $28 million domestic over its third weekend.

The R-rated comedy LONG SHOT was in seventh place with $3.4 million. After three weekends, the $40 million Charlize Theron/Seth Rogen political romance has a domestic total of $25.7 million.

In eighth place was the new PG-13 drama THE SUN IS ALSO A STAR with an opening of $2.6 million.

The adaptation of Nicola Yoon's best-selling young-adult novel cost a reported $9 million. The teen romance couldn't draw critics into its orbit, with a 50% average on Rotten Tomatoes.

The PG-13 senior cheerleader comedy POMS was in ninth place with $2 million, shaking off 61% of business from its opening last weekend. The Diane Keaton fanfare has a ten-day domestic total of $10 million (which is also its reported cost).

Closing out the list was animated family comedy UGLYDOLLS with $1.6 million. The $45 million musical based on the line of deformed toys has a domestic total of $17.2 million on its third weekend.

Outside the chart, faith-based drama BREAKTHROUGH departed along with "Lord of the Rings" author biopic TOLKIEN and space superhero CAPTAIN MARVEL (which finished up with $425 million domestic and $1.13 billion worldwide).

Next week introduces a few Memorial Day weekend options like the James Gunn-produced superpowered horror movie BRIGHTBURN, the R-rated high school comedy BOOKSMART (the feature directing debut of actress Olivia Wilde), and Disney's latest attempt to transform an animated classic to live-action with ALADDIN.
