The kids are alright at #1!
Young men getting into adult-sized mischief brought the biggest crowds this weekend to put GOOD BOYS on top at the box office with an estimated opening of $21 million!
The feature directing debut of Gene Stupnitsky (a writer on TV series "The Office"), the new R-rated comedy from producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg cost a reported $20 million.
The party-seeking trio of truant sixth-graders (led by Jacob Tremblay of ROOM and THE PREDATOR) also grabbed $2.1 million from international audiences for a $23.1 million worldwide weekend.
Critics were mostly amused by the horny misadventures of wayward children, giving the movie an 80% average on Rotten Tomatoes. Skip over to the JoBlo review HERE.
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Jason Statham pumped the brakes as FAST & FURIOUS PRESENTS: HOBBS & SHAW slowed to second place with $14.1 million.
On its third weekend, the $200 million action spinoff from JOHN WICK director David Leitch has driven to a domestic total of $133.7 million (passing the $127 million finish of 2 FAST 2 FURIOUS) and a worldwide total of $437 million.
The remake of Disney's THE LION KING kept its claws in third place with $11.9 million as the royal cub prepares to crest the half-bllion domestic peak.
After five weekends, director Jon Favreau's PG-rated lifelike animation has climbed to an imposing $1.43 billion worldwide, on a reported cost of $250 million.
Opening in fourth place was the new animated sequel THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE 2 with $10.5 million for the weekend.
The PG-rated follow-up of irritable feathered friends (whose voices include Jason Sudeikis, Bill Hader and Josh Gad) has a domestic total of $16.2 million since it flew into theaters on Wednesday.
Based on the once-popular mobile game, the original THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE opened with $38 million in May of 2016 and catapulted to $107.5 million domestic and $352 million worldwide on a $73 million budget (the sequel came with a reported $65 million price tag).
Critics were moderately entertained by the continued conflict between green pigs and hurled birds, giving the movie an average of 76% on Rotten Tomatoes.
In fifth place was the PG-13 horror movie SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK with $10 million, frightening away 52% of business from its opening last weekend.
The adaptation of Alvin Schwartz's books from producer/co-writer Guillermo del Toro and director Andre Ovredal has a ten-day domestic total of $40.2 million and $54.3 million worldwide, on a reported $28 million cost.
In sixth place was the shark thriller 47 METERS DOWN: UNCAGED with an opening of $9 million.
The PG-13 underwater psuedo-sequel came out below the original 47 METERS DOWN, which first surfaced with $11.2 million in June 2017 before treading to $44.3 million domestic on a budget of $5 million.
Again directed by Johannes Roberts, the new subaquatic survival horror with Corinne Foxx and Sistine Stallone (daughters of Jamie Foxx and Sylvester Stallone) cost a reported $12 million.
Critics were divided on the submerged supper served to some hungry Great Whites, giving the movie a 50% average on Rotten Tomatoes. You can paddle over to the JoBlo review HERE.
The PG-rated adventure movie DORA AND THE LOST CITY OF GOLD was in seventh place with $8.5 million, losing 51% from last week's opening for a domestic total of $33.9 million. The $49 million Nickelodeon cartoon adaptation has a worldwide total of $44.6 million.
In eighth place was Quentin Tarantino's R-rated period piece ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD with $7.6 million. Over its fourth weekend, the 1969 Brad Pitt/Leonardo DiCaprio/Margot Robbie comedy-drama has a domestic total of $114.3 million on a reported cost of $90 million.
Opening in ninth place was the new PG-13 comedy-drama BLINDED BY THE LIGHT with $4.4 million.
Directed by Gurinder Chadha (BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM), the Bruce Springsteen-inspired tale of a British-Pakistani teen in 1987 cost a reported $15 million.
Critics were mostly uplifted by the exuberant kids influenced by music of The Boss, giving the movie a 90% average on Rotten Tomatoes. Rock on over to the JoBlo review HERE.
Closing out the list was the PG-rated dog drama THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN with $4.4 million, down by 46% from last week's opening. The $20 million travelogue with Milo Ventimiglia and his Kevin Costner-voiced hound has fetched a ten-day domestic total of $16.8 million.
Outside the chart, Pixar's TOY STORY 4 went back in the box along with comedy-drama THE FAREWELL, crime-drama THE KITCHEN (after a single weekend in the Top 10) and superhero sequel SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME, which finally crawled over the $373 million domestic finish of Sam Raimi's SPIDER-MAN 2 and also became Sony's highest-grossing worldwide release as it topped the $1.1 billion global total of SKYFALL.
Meanwhile, the Cate Blanchett comedy-drama WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE opened on 2400 screens but couldn't crack the list with $3.4 million for the weekend.
Director Richard Linklater's PG-13 adaptation of Maria Semple's mystery novel also didn't find a strong response from critics, who gave it a 44% average on Rotten Tomatoes (the JoBlo review is HERE).
Next weekend's new releases include the Gerard Butler action sequel ANGEL HAS FALLEN, and the horror-thriller READY OR NOT (on Wednesday).
