Tom Holland’s Uncharted film gets delayed – again

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

To quote Lando Calrissian from THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, "This deal keeps getting worse all the time."

In the neverending saga that is the UNCHARTED movie, Sony Pictures has once again pushed back the project from December 2020 to March 5, 2021. This is due in large part to the loss of yet another director, Travis Knight, who left over creative differences in December. In case you were counting at home, this brings the total up to a whopping six directors the film has lost in the decade since development began. The previous five include David O. Russell, Neil Burger, Seth Gordon, Shawn Levy, and Dan Trachtenberg. It's like the potential directors are playing hot potato and no one wants to hold on to this specific spud.

UNCHARTED is based on the popular video game series of the same name from developer Naughty Dog. To date five games have been released in the franchise, which follows treasure hunter Nathan Drake who travels the globe uncovering historical mysteries. Although the Indiana Jones-esque character is in his mid to late 30s, the upcoming film will focus on a younger version of Nathan Drake, played by SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING veteran Tom Holland. Mark Wahlberg also recently signed on to play Victor "Sully" Sullivan, Drake's friend and mentor.

From a production standpoint the move makes perfect sense. Sony is currently on the hunt for a new director to helm the production. In order to meet the December 2020 release date, production would have to start relatively soon. You kind of can't do that if you don't have anyone to steer the ship. Although Sony hasn't officially named a new director yet, reports have VENOM's Ruben Fleischer as the leading candidate. Will he be the next person to drop out of the project take over directing duties? Time will tell.

At this point UNCHARTED's production is starting to feel cursed. It's like that one episode of The Simpsons where Homer's BBQ goes awry and his pig starts flying through various forms of gunk while the patriarch exclaims, "It's still good! It's still good!" Naughty Dog hasn't released an Uncharted title for three years and that one – Uncharted: The Lost Legacy – didn't even star Nathan Drake. Are people really dying to see an UNCHARTED film? What audience is this movie even for? Personally, I'd much rather see a fifth Indiana Jones adventure than this one.

So what do you guys think of this news? Are you excited for an UNCHARTED movie? Frustrated this film keeps getting pushed back? Sound off in the comments below!
