Tom Holland reflects on past, future as Spider-Man after Marvel-Sony split

Over the last few years, the people at Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios have been making Spider-Man/Peter Parker a huge factor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and now as of last week, he’s not part of it at all. The deal between Sony and Marvel letting the former use the character in the latter’s movies has come to an end, with plenty having thoughts on the matter as everyone else simply spent time curled in a ball on the floor. Tom Holland, the man behind the webs, remained silent on the matter for the first few days, but this weekend he got a chance to say his piece and reflect on his past and future as the wall-crawler.

Holland was at D23 this weekend to promote his other movie under the Disney house – the Pixar movie ONWARD – when he stopped by PEOPLE and EW to talk about the end of the partnership between the studios, and where that places his future as the character.

“Basically, we’ve made five great movies. It’s been five amazing years. I’ve had the time of my life. Who knows what the future holds? But all I know is that I’m going to continue playing Spider-Man and having the time of my life. It’s going to be so fun, however we choose to do it. The future for Spider-Man will be different, but it will be equally as awesome and amazing, and we’ll find new ways to make it even cooler.”

Holland was cast as Spider-Man after a highly publicized search for the character kicked off as news broke that Sony would be teaming with Marvel to once again revitalize the superhero at the movies. Since then, he has appeared in more movies as the character than any actor before him, starring in five movies ever since making his debut in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR back in 2016.

The licensing deal between Marvel and Sony always seemed doomed to come to an end at any time, with many fearing Sony would take Spidey back for their own connected universe of movies whenever they wanted. Indeed, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige also opened up about the matter while at D23, saying that Spider-Man’s role in the MCU was never meant to be permanent and that he’s grateful they got to use him as much as they did.

“I’m feeling about Spider-Man gratitude and joy. We got to make five films within the MCU with Spider-Man: two standalone films and three with the Avengers. It was a dream that I never thought would happen. It was never meant to last forever. We knew there was a finite amount of time that we’d be able to do this, and we told the story we wanted to tell, and I’ll always be thankful for that.”

Ever since the major news broke last week there has been a lot of speculating on if the deal between the two studios is indeed done, or if there was still a chance everything could be mended and Spider-Man could keep playing with the Avengers. But the way these two are talking makes it seem like the relationship is for sure done, which begs the question of where Sony will take Peter Parker after the events of the last movie. Also, is he just supposed to forget about being turned into ash or missing Tony Stark? Granted, I'm sure he'll have a lot on his plate after meeting Tom Hardy's Venom…
