It's been well over a year since we last heard anything about Legendary's THE TOXIC AVENGER remake, but the project finally seems to be moving forward as Deadline has reported that Game of Thrones' Peter Dinklage is slated to star.
The contemporary reimagining of the Troma classic is slated to be written and directed by Macon Blair (I DON'T FEEL AT HOME IN THIS WORLD ANYMORE) and will follow a struggling every-man who is pushed into a vat of toxic waste and is transformed into "a mutant freak who must go from shunned outcast to underdog hero as he races to save his son, his friends, and his community from the forces of corruption and greed." The original low-budget comedy splatter film quickly became a cult classic upon its release in 1984 and spawned several sequels (THE TOXIC AVENGER PART II, THE TOXIC AVENGER PART III: THE LAST TEMPTATION OF TOXIE, and CITIZEN TOXIE: THE TOXIC AVENGER IV), an animated TV series, a musical, and a video-game. Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz are on board to serve as producers of the reboot. Although THE TOXIC AVENGER was never high on my list of movies that I thought would be resurrected, I've got to admit that the pairing of Macon Blair and Peter Dinklage has me rather intrigued.
There have been several attempts at rebooting THE TOXIC AVENGER over the years. Nearly a decade ago it was announced that a remake of THE TOXIC AVENGER would be co-written and directed by Steve Pink (HOT TUB TIME MACHINE) with Arnold Schwarzenegger in talks to star. Unlike the Troma movies, the reboot would have been a family-friendly PG-13 outing similar to the animated TV series. The project didn't take off and remained in development hell for several years until Conrad Vernon (SAUSAGE PARTY) signed on to helm the film, but that project fell apart as well and Legendary Entertainment soon scooped up the rights.
