The Suicide Squad: First trailer gives us a new look at our favorite misfits

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

The first trailer for The Suicide Squad has finally been released and it shows that James Gunn's take is going to give us a fresh look at our favorite misfits.

It doesn't take long to realize during the trailer that the film is going to be VERY tonally different from its predecessor. I would even argue that, even by viewing this short snippet, this is the Suicide Squad film we deserved the first time around. Many members of the movie's ensemble cast are featured in the trailer and it gives just about all of them a moment to shine. In the trailer, we get to see Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, John Cena as Peacemaker, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Steve Agee as King Shark, and many many more. By the end of the trailer, I got major vibes from Amazon's The Boys and I mean that as the highest compliment.

The Suicide Squad is in an interesting position because it's not exactly a sequel and it's not exactly a reboot. The film won't necessarily acknowledge the events of David Ayer's 2016 movie, though it will bring back several of the same characters. Gunn's take will follow the members of Task Force X after they're sent to the South American island of Corto Maltese to destroy Jotunheim, a Nazi-era prison, and laboratory which held political prisoners and conducted experiments.

In addition to the aforementioned cast members, The Suicide Squad also stars Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Peter Capaldi as Thinker, Alice Braga as Sol Soria, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Michael Rooker as Savant, Nathan Fillion as T.D.K., and Sean Gunn as Weasel, Flula Borg as Javelin, Storm Reid as Tyla, Juan Diego Botto as Silvio Luna, and Mayling Ng as Mongal. Steve Agee is also pulling double duty doing the motion capture for King Shark and starring as John Economos.
