The release date for Star Wars: Episode VII may end up being a Christmas gift

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Since 1977, every STAR WARS movie has been released in May. When STAR WARS: EPISODE VII was announced with a 2015 release date, we all made the assumption that it would hit theaters in May of that year. But, as we learned from THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT, assumptions will make an ass outta you and umption. There was nothing tying STAR WARS: EPISODE VII to that month aside from tradition, and with such a short window to complete the film, we may be able to forget about a May release date.

According to Badass Digest, citing multiple sources, J.J. Abrams may be getting a few extra months to work on STAR WARS: EPISODE VII as rumors have the film potentially hitting theaters on December 15, 2015 or as late as Christmas Day. If things run long during production, it may push into 2016, but it sounds like they are doing everything they can to avoid that from happening.

2015 is already shaping up to be a massive summer for movies with THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5, ASSASSIN’S CREED, the new TERMINATOR, Pixar’s INSIDE OUT and BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN all hitting screens amongst many others, STAR WARS: EPISODE VII would definitely feel some impact on the box office. Moving it to Christmas would guarantee less competition and the potential for AVATAR level grosses. I would rather give Abrams more time to make the best movie possible, so I have no problem with this. I guarantee some fans will begin ranting at the sanctity of the May date. I guess there goes May the 4th.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII may (pun intended) hit screens December 2015.
