Tenet’s August release date not looking good

In news that’s all but certain not to surprise anyone, Variety is reporting that another TENET delay is considered imminent, thanks to dire new predictions via leading box office analyst Eric Handler of MKM Partners. According to the publication, Handler’s predictions are largely based on the fact that movie theatres in New York remain closed, with Coronavirus cases having surged in many major markets, including California.

It does indeed some unlikely that a $200 million plus movie like TENET, or Disney’s MULAN would ever be launched without NY/L.A screens available. So far studios seem optimistic about August and the early fall movie season, but it’s looking more and more likely that widespread new theatrical releases will be off the table for some time to come. I’d expect more release date shuffling any day now, although hopefully something like BILL & TED FACE THE MUSIC will still come out, even if only via streaming or VOD, which, movies like GREYHOUND and THE KING OF STATEN ISLAND are proving is better than nothing.

Stay tuned.
