Summit Entertainment is making their move to replace the golden goose that was the TWILIGHT series with their next foray into YA adaptation land with DIVERGENT, the dystopian tale where people are divided into factions based on their individual attributes, and today we have a peek at the first teaser. Directed by Neil Burger (LIMITLESS, THE ILLUSIONIST), the film stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Miles Teller, Maggie Q, Jai Courtney, Tony Goldwyn, Ray Stevenson, Ashley Judd, and Kate Winslet. The footage is a little more sprawling than what was shown at Comic Con, but it doesn’t really do much in the way of getting my ass into a theater for it.
Take a look:
Here’s the synopsis:
In a future world people are divided into factions based on personality, a teenager is warned she is Divergent and will never fit into any one group. When she discovers a conspiracy to destroy all Divergents, her life is threatened.
The popular thing would be to bash this as yet another YA high-concept cash grab, but I’ll leave that to the strike backs. It’s an interesting comparison, especially if you look at the comments left where the trailer premiered, where the excitement level is through the roof. It all comes down to the demographic and market for YA films, which have found a niche for themselves in the last few years, much like comic-book films have. Both have had successes and failures and I’m sure a lot of fingers are crossed for DIVERGENT to be in the success category.
DIVERGENT hits theaters on March 21, 2014.
