Taika Waititi is being courted to develop a Star Wars movie

Taika Waititi, Star Wars

Now that STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER has brought an end to the Skywalker Saga, the future of the franchise on the big-screen isn't yet known, but there are plenty of possibilities in development. STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI writer/director Rian Johnson is still expected to craft a brand-new STAR WARS trilogy, and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is also slated to develop a STAR WARS film alongside Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. According to THR, we may have another potential player in the STAR WARS franchise as THOR: RAGNAROK's Taika Waititi has apparently been approached to develop a STAR WARS movie as well.

THR's sources aren't clear at this time whether the STAR WARS project Lucasfilm wants Taika Waititi on is the same one being developed by Kevin Feige, or if it's a separate project. Of course, Waititi isn't a stranger to the STAR WARS franchise, as he directed the season finale of The Mandalorian in addition to voicing IG-11, the re-programmed bounty hunting droid. Although Disney/Lucasfilm seems keen on adding Taika Waititi to their creative fold, the director is quite busy at the moment. He's currently in post-production on NEXT GOAL WINS, a sports comedy starring Michael Fassbender and Elisabeth Moss, and is looking to kick off production on THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER later this year for a November 5, 2021 release. While I'd certainly be down to see what Taika Waititi can do with the STAR WARS franchise, I would hope that we don't see another repeat of SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY and the firing of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

Would you like to see Taika Waititi take the helm of a STAR WARS movie?
