Allow me to take you down a fascinating Instagram trail that all happens because of action-star, Sylvester Stallone. The actor posted up an image of the RAMBO: LAST BLOOD extended cut and that seemed to get his fans excited but somewhere down the line a fan comments how stoked he is to get his copy to only bring up that we also need a director's cut of ROCKY BALBOA. Never one to turn down an opportunity for self-promotion, Stallone couldn't bring news of that director's cut but he did casually drop a little nugget about a director's cut of ROCKY IV.
You can check out the Instagram thread by heading to Stallone's Instagram page but if you don't want to go through a sea of endless scrolling, you can check out an image of the exchange below. No other info is available on this as of now but since Stallone is the source, it seems like a sure thing that this director's cut is actually coming:
Critical reception on ROCKY IV was mixed upon release but the sequel is arguably the biggest mainstream crowd-pleaser of the bunch. The film earned a massive $300 million worldwide and it was the highest-grossing sports film of all-time for 24 years until it was overtaken by THE BLIND SIDE. The film's events would go on to serve as the backstory to the plot of CREED II, where Apollo Creed's (Carl Weathers) son, Donnie (Michael B. Jordan), is challenged to fight Drago's (Dolph Lundgren) son, Viktor (Florian "Big Nasty" Munteanu). In ROCKY IV, the Soviet Union and its top boxer make an entrance into professional boxing with their best athlete Ivan Drago (Lundgren), who initially wants to take on World champion Rocky Balboa (Stallone). Rocky's best friend Apollo Creed decides to fight him instead but (*NEARLY 35 YEAR SPOILER ALERT*) he's fatally beaten in the ring which leads to Rocky to decide to fight Drago in the Soviet Union to avenge the death of his friend.
If there is more to be added to an already truly fun and memorable film. I'll take it. Hopefully, Stallone and company make more announcements on this son because I think fan demand for it would be pretty high. Would YOU go all-in on a director's cut of ROCKY IV?
