The CW's SUPERGIRL makes history tonight by airing an episode featuring the origin story of Dreamer, the very first transgender superhero on national television. Dreamer is played by New England's Nicole Maines, the transgender activist who triumphed in the 2014 discrimination case which allowed transgender students to get access to campus bathrooms that aligned with their identities.
Maines landed her fist noticeable onscreen role in a 2015 episode of USA Network's ROYAL PAINS, which went on to win a GLAAD Media Award. In 2016, she made an appearance on the HBO documentary THE TRANS LIST, and in 2018, she was introduced to the world as a "real-life hero" at the popular California event San Diego Comic Con, an annual convention populated with comic book fans and stars from around the globe. Later that year in October, Maines was cast on the CW television series SUPERGIRL as cub reporter Nia Nal, a journalist who finds herself plagued with prophetic dreams and visions.
In tonight’s episode, titled "Blood Memory", Melissa Bonoist's Supergirl accompanies Nia to revisit her roots to gather some new information about Nia’s past, therefore the two can hopefully begin to understand Nia's strange affliction. Next Sunday’s episode, titled "Menagerie", will deliver the first scenes of the fully costumed Maines in action.
SUPERGIRL airs Sunday nights at 8/7 central on the CW network.
