It's official, folks, STARGIRL is getting a second season at The CW!
That's right, I said The CW, not DC Universe. In fact, when the show returns for its sophomore season, The CW will act as the exclusive in-season home to the series, with episodes airing on the CW network and streaming the next day on the CW’s free, ad-supported streaming platforms. What exactly does that mean for DC Universe subscribers? Simply put, it means that DC's STARGIRL will not be available on the platform.
DC's STARGIRL follows high school sophomore Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) as she leads an unlikely group of young heroes against villains of the past. The show chronicles the rise of Stargirl as well as the establishment of DC's first superhero team, the Justice Society of America. Joining Bassinger as members of the STARGIRL cast are Luke Wilson, Amy Smart, Trae Romano, Cameron Gellman, Yvette Monreal, Anjelika Washington, Meg DeLacy, Neil Jackson, Jake Austin Walker, Christopher James Baker and Hunter Sansone.
While DCU does not share its viewership numbers, it's to be understood that the show has performed rather well on the CW. To date, it has averaged a 0.2 rating in adults 18-49 and just over 1 million viewers per episode in the Nielsen Live+Same Day ratings. That places STARGIRL on the same playing field as other DC superhero shows like ARROW, DC's LEGENDS OF TOMORROW, BATWOMAN, and THE FLASH.
STARGIRL is the latest show to move to The CW after the network acquired the rights to SWAMP THING, which had been unceremoniously canceled shortly after the launch of its first season.
What do you think about DC Universe losing its exclusivity to STARGIRL and other shows? Do you see the subscription service lasting beyond the close of this year with platforms like The CW and HBO Max scooping up shows left and right? Are you taking advantage of DC Universe's comic book library? Let us know where you're at with all that in the comments section below.
